Applying to college can be a more human and inspiring experience than most people anticipate, though a crucial foundation is learning to step away from anxiety into the exciting possibilities for learning and self-discovery that college will open up. We’ll work together to explore what kind of learning environment will nurture who you are, your interests & talents, your academic & career goals, your personality. Then we’ll dive into application strategy and written materials, so you feel confident and proud of how you present yourself and your life experiences to the colleges on your list.
Build your College List, fine tune into a shortlist of 10-15 schools: Tailor a list to who you are, what you’re most interested in exploring as a college student, your preferences (location, # students, potential majors & activities, campus community & support)

Whether you’re applying to your first job, seeking a promotion, contemplating a career move, or unsure about next steps in your career path, Dr. J will begin with a detailed review of your educational-professional trajectory and personalized discussion of what drives and inspires you, what holds you back, and how you’d like to grow. Then we’ll map out a plan for future goals.
Embrace Your Strengths, Develop Your Personal Brand: Distill your strengths, talents, and the unique perspective you bring — then translate that into a clear personal brand, communicated across your Resume, Website / Social Media presence, Correspondence/Cover Letters, and more!
Build a List of Target Fields, Specific Target Roles and/or Organizations
Resume/CV Update: Your resume tells a story of your educational-professional trajectory, provides a glimpse into your interests and skills, and allows employers to understand what you would bring to their role/organization. We’ll review & transform your current resume, decide what to add vs. what’s no longer relevant to where you’re headed next, and design a new CV that reflects your industry, personality, sensibility.
Cover Letter Strategy: Cover letters provide a snapshot of who you are, why you’re interested in this specific role, and your experiences related to this position. Employers want to know what you’ll bring to their company — skills, experience, professional/life perspectives — and an effective letter entices them to want to learn more!
Interview Preparation: Interviews can often be a psychological battle more than anything. We’ll discuss strategy and review common questions in your field, then run through mock interviews so you can shake out nerves, test potential responses, feel confident (even excited!) moving into the real thing.

Whether you’re interested in pursuing a Masters in Education or a Neuroscience PhD, Law School or an MFA, applying to a graduate program is a more intensive and personal process than most clients have experienced before — and nothing like college applications! Dr. J is eager to guide you through each step, with the benefit of her experience as an educator, admissions coach, and survivor of a Ph.D.!
Program List: Compile a Best Fit list of programs aligned with your interests, mission, career goals — programs that will support you, what you hope to learn & accomplish.
Updating Your Resume to an Academic CV: Knowing your audience is so important for the resume/CV you include with grad applications; the resume that helped you get a specific job is not the same resume you’d use for Masters. Law, or PhD applications!
Recommender Strategy: Choosing recommenders across academic and professional contexts is a delicate art — and is a key component of a successful application.
Statement of Purpose / Personal Statement: An opportunity to tell your story and communicate your interests, experiences, intellectual passions. Not a prose version of your resume or accomplishment list, this narrative connects the dots to present a Mission Statement for why you’re prepared and inspired to pursue this program now.
Personal History/Diversity Statement, Academic History/Challenges, Other Essays: Human contexts for your educational path and experiences that have shaped your perspectives on your chosen field(s) to help committees understand who you are.
Advisor Outreach: MA/MS & PhD programs often encourage candidates to reach out to potential advisors to explore whether you’d be a mutually good fit. This also helps identify programs that will best support who you are and the grad work you hope to do.
